STRINGS
HILDRED MINICH SCHOLARSHIP for String Players

Initiated in 1997, this scholarship was established by the Minich family and friends to provide scholarships to students skilled in violin, viola, cello or bass to continue their education at an accredited collegiate level institution. The Hildred Minich Scholarship is intended to help fund tuition for talented young people who want to make classical music an important part of their lives.  Scholarship applicants will be asked to submit a (digital) publicity photo to awardphotos@fresnomusicalclub.org for the Fresno Musical Club website and may be invited to perform at future Fresno Musical Club events.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: String players may apply who are high school seniors or community college students and have applied to continue studies at an accredited college, university or conservatory with a major or minor in music. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.  Candidates may apply for only one award category per audition season.   

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
: Applicants will be required to perform one (1) movement of a standard concerto or comparable piece (memorized) and one (1) composition of their own choosing. Two (2) copies of the score should be made available for the adjudicators. Applicants must supply their own accompanists.  If needed, a referral list of local accompanists may be obtained by contacting the Hildred Minich Scholarship Chairman at awards@fresnomusicalclub.org

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
: Applicants must provide LETTERS of recommendation from their current music teacher and from one (1) other person.  In addition, a SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT for the past twelve (12) months showing a grade point average of 3.0 or better, and a $30.00 non-refundable ENTRY FEE (payable to Fresno Musical Club) must accompany the APPLICATION.  Finally, please submit a (digital) publicity PHOTO (.jpg or .jpeg; 72 dpi; about one (1) MB) to awardphotos@fresnomusicalclub.org.  Include YOUR NAME + MINICH SCHOLARSHIP in the subject line. *Sending the photo gives permission to the Fresno Musical Club to use the photo on their website and for future publicity.

SINGERS
FMC YOUNG SINGER AWARD (ages 18 – 22)

Established in 2005, the FMC Young Singer Award is funded by the Fresno Musical Club, memorial donations, and private contributions.  Award applicants will be asked to submit a (digital) publicity PHOTO to awardphotos@fresnomusicalclub.org for the Fresno Musical Club website and may be invited to perform at future Musical Club events.  Candidates may apply for only one (1) award category per audition season. Former 1st place winners of the FMC Young Singer Award may not re-apply for this category.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: This award is available to singers 18 – 22 years of age by January 1, 2017, who currently reside in Fresno, Madera, Kings and Tulare Counties.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:  Applicant will prepare four (4) selections from the standard classical vocal music repertoire, illustrating technique with a variety of contrasting styles, differing tempos, and language skillsSelections should be from at least three stylistic periods, ie. Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary.

  1. One (1) selection should come from oratorio/operatic repertoire in the original language, suitable to experience and ability.
  2.  Two (2) selections should be chosen from art songs in foreign languages.
  3.  One (1) song should be in English.

The audition committee expects to hear no less than ten (10) minutes of prepared, MEMORIZED material.  Singers are expected to provide their own ACCOMPANISTS.  At the audition, singers must provide THREE (3) COPIES of each musical selection for the audition committee.

ADDITIONAL APPLICATION PROCEDURES:  With the completed application, applicant must include the following attachments:

  1. RESUME listing past/present voice teachers, musical activities/performances, and scholarships/awards
  2. One (1) copy of your Audition PROGRAM listing titles and composers
  3. Letter of RECOMMENDATION from your current voice teacher
  4. Non-refundable ENTRY FEE of $30.00 (payable to Fresno Musical Club)
  5. Your confirmed ACCOMPANIST’S NAME.  If needed, a referral list of local accompanists may be obtained by contacting the FMC Young Singer Award Chairman at awards@fresnomusicalclub.org
  6. A (digital) publicity PHOTO; (.jpg or.jpeg:72 dpi about 1 MB) sent to awardphotos@fresnomusicalclub.org including YOUR NAME + YOUNG SINGER AWARD in the subject line. **Sending this photo gives your permission for its use on the Fresno Musical Club website and in future printed material.  
  7. Auditions are closed to the public. YOU MAY APPLY FOR ONLY ONE (1) AWARD CATEGORY PER SEASON. Former 1st place winners of the FMC Young Singer Award may not re-apply for this category.

Pianists
SUSAN TORRES AWARD FOR PIANISTS ages 20 – 30

The SUSAN TORRES AWARD is presented annually in memory of Mrs. Torres, pianist and teacher, who served as President of the Fresno Musical Club from 1982 through 1984.  Her husband Anthony Torres established this Award in 2007, and their daughter, Jennifer Biancucci, remains the primary contributor.

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS:
Only pianists may enter who are between the ages of 20 to 30 as of January 1, 2017 and who are currently studying as a music major or minor at an accredited college, university or conservatory.  Applicants for the Susan Torres Award may audition for only one (1) FMC award category per season and cannot be previous first place winners of the SUSAN TORRES AWARD.  Applicants must submit a publicity PHOTO for the Fresno Musical Club website (awardphotos@fresnomusicalclub.org) and may be invited to perform at future Fresno Musical Club events.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

1.  APPLICANTS MUST PREPARE a minimum of 30 minutes of memorized piano solo literature including at least 3 different works of contrasting styles.

2.  AUDITION LITERATURE:  THREE (3) contrasting solo works, as follows:

a.  Required:  A sonata movement from the keyboard works of Mozart, Haydn or Beethoven.

b.  Required:  A large scale piece from the Romantic period (can include Schubert) containing one or more movements.

c.  Required:  One contrasting piece of performer’s choice from one of the following groups:

i.  Baroque Period:  A work by Bach containing a fugue or fugal section

ii.  Impressionistic Period:  A work of Ravel or Debussy 

iii.  The 20th or 21st Centuries:  A work with a distinctly contemporary sound; roughly spanning Bartok through published works of current living composers.

3. ON AUDITION DAY:

a. Plan to arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the appointed audition time.

b. Check in at the registration desk.  Please leave your cell phone number with the registrar so you may be contacted should you be a winner.

c. Applicants must provide a valid birth certificate or a driver’s license.

d. Applicants must provide one (1) published copy of each work to be performed.  Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

ADVANCED STUDENTS IN MUSIC 
BELL T. RITCHIE AWARD

Established in 1981, the Bell T. Ritchie Awards are made at the committee’s discretion to classically trained musicians who are career oriented and ready to enter a professional field.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: A maximum of eight (8) musicians will be invited to audition for an award, with preference given to residents of California and students studying in California. Awards are made on the basis of talent, presentation, financial need and career promise. The adjudicators’ decisions are final. Recipients will not be granted awards in consecutive years. Candidates may apply for only one award category per audition season. Award applicants will be asked to submit a (digital) publicity photo to awardphotos@fresnomusicalclub.org for the Fresno Musical Club’s website. Former 1st place winners of the Bell T. Ritchie Award may not re-apply to this category.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicant will be notified of time, location, and date of audition within two weeks of the application deadline. Applicant will be responsible for providing an accompanist, if needed. An application will not be accepted without the name of the applicant’s confirmed accompanist.

Applicant should prepare a memorized 20-minute program of varied styles and techniques. The committee will listen to at least 10 minutes of music. Please provide one (1) copy of the music and four (4) copies of the audition program for the committee at the audition.

Singers: (ages 25 – 32) program must include a major operatic aria.
Instrumentalists: (ages 21 -28) program may include one movement of a concerto.
Pianists: (ages 21 – 28) program may include one movement of a concerto. (Accompanist not required for pianists.)

All applicants: Please list additional repertory ready to perform at audition.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

The application must be accompanied by a $30.00 non-refundable entry fee, one (1) copy of the audition program, three (3) completed recommendations, and the name of applicant’s confirmed accompanist (if needed).

3.) EVENTS SCHEDULE:

The completed BT Ritchie Award application and all attachments (including the emailed photo) must be POST-MARKED by Monday February 6, 2017.
Bell T. Ritchie Award Auditions will be held Saturday March 11, 2017.
